OVERVIEW OF ABET AND ACCELERATED ABET:
Adult Basic Education and Training is the basic provision of lifelong learning. It is aimed at learners who have had little or no formal schooling and who do not hold a compulsory school-leaving certificate. ABET consists of levels along a continuum of learning , in which learners can enter and exit at multiple points and receive the equivalent of compulsory education certificates. ABET includes a core of behaviour , skills, knowledge, values and experiences which form the basis of general education.
Accredited to provide the Full GETC(NQF Level1):120 credits
additional learning areas may be added to the Literacy and Mathematics programme.
ACCELERATED ABET:
Accelerated learning implies reaching completion more quickly .This programme is not a 'quick fix' or 'drive-through' programme. Accelerated ABET concerns itself with skills and competencies- in other words, with OUTCOMES. It is not based on a teaching syllabus, but rather on the knowledge and skills required for effective communication. It follows therefore, that the desired outcome is communicative competence(Cognition Proficiency) in order to link the four basic skills(listening, speaking, reading, writing) to the needs of the world. Accelerated ABET encapsulates methodologies that include Interactive Participation, Group Work, Repetition, Drilling(Manipulation Drills) and Mastery. Included in the teaching methodology are Role Plays, Word and Picture Cards, Audio Aids that enhance repetition and mastery of skills. Reinforcement of Literacy and Numeracy skills linked to Specific Outcomes of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The training programme is compacted into a much shorter time frame as opposed to the general provision of ABET, without creating an injustice to the learning experience.
